Waterlogging Back to Haunt Gujarat, Surat Streets Flooded by Heavy Rain; Schools Closed
Surat faces flood-like conditions after 8 inches of rain; schools are closed, and 100+ are cleared. An orange alert was issued over South & Central Gujarat. IMD warns of more heavy rain ahead.
A flood-like situation continues to hold Surat and nearby areas in Gujarat as heavy rainfall battered the city for a continuous day, seriously affecting daily life. Low-lying regions have been submerged, prompting emergency departures and school closures over the city.
Waterlogged roads
Today, over 8 inches of rainfall was recorded in Surat, driving to basic waterlogging in key areas. Roads close Ashapuri Temple in Bardoli and private zones such as Deepnagar were immersed, with floodwaters entering homes and shops, leaving residents stranded. According to officials, the Fire Department cleared over 100 people, including children, from affected schools and societies.
SDM Bardoli Jigna Parmar stated, The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for parts of South and Central Gujarat, with forecasts showing continued heavy rain through tomorrow. A Yellow Alert remains in place for June 24."
Disaster response units, including NDRF and SDRF groups, have been sent to vulnerable areas under orange and red alerts. On June 22, extremely heavy rainfall (>20 cm in 24 hours) was recorded at separated areas over Gujarat and East Madhya Pradesh, according to IMD data.
